Meet the Team Behind SULVS
Choosing a school is about more than courses, technology, and schedules. Families also want to know who will support their child along the way. At Southern University Laboratory Virtual School, our team works together to ensure students across Louisiana feel connected, challenged, and supported, even when their classroom is at home.
SULVS is a tuition-free public virtual school serving Louisiana students through a structured online learning environment. Our students receive instruction from Louisiana-certified teachers, participate in live virtual classes, complete coursework through Canvas, and receive guidance from a team committed to helping them learn, grow, and thrive.
Leadership Focused on Student Success
Principal Jalynn L. Davis-Jones leads SULVS with a focus on academic achievement, student engagement, family partnerships, and continuous school improvement. Her work centers on creating a virtual school experience that combines flexibility with structure, accountability, and meaningful support.
As part of the Southern University Laboratory School District, SULVS also benefits from a long tradition of educational excellence and innovation. Our laboratory school designation connects us to the Southern University System, the only historically Black college and university system in the nation. This relationship helps create opportunities for collaboration, early college experiences, career exploration, and preparation for life beyond high school.
Academic Guidance and Student Support
Our Academic Advisor and Counselor, Karris Story, helps students and families navigate important academic decisions. This includes reviewing student progress, assisting with course planning, supporting graduation preparation, and helping students explore college and career pathways.
For middle and high school students, academic advising is especially important as they begin making decisions about graduation requirements, dual enrollment, career and technical education, and postsecondary opportunities. Through initiatives such as the SULVS Early Degree Growth Experience, or EDGE, eligible high school students may explore opportunities to earn college credit, industry-based credentials, technical certificates, or even work toward an associate degree while completing high school.
Louisiana-Certified Virtual Teachers
At the heart of our school is a team of dedicated Louisiana-certified teachers. SULVS teachers do more than post assignments online. They provide live instruction, guide students through Canvas coursework, monitor academic progress, offer feedback, and help students develop the skills needed to become independent learners.
Teachers also provide office hours, small-group instruction, intervention, enrichment, and additional academic support when students need it. In a public virtual school, communication matters. Our teachers work closely with students, Learning Coaches, counselors, and administrators to identify concerns early and help students stay on track.
Support Beyond the Virtual Classroom
Successful online learning requires a strong support system. Our administrative and student support teams assist families with enrollment, attendance, student records, technology questions, school communications, assessments, and other day-to-day needs.
The SULVS team also organizes virtual and in-person opportunities that help students feel connected to their school community. These may include regional meet-ups, field trips, clubs, family meetings, school pictures, testing events, college and career activities, and special programs throughout the school year.
Although students attend school online, they remain part of an active Louisiana school community.
Families Are Part of the Team
Learning Coaches and families are essential members of the SULVS team. They help establish daily routines, monitor attendance and assignments, encourage communication, and support students as they gradually take greater responsibility for their learning.
We understand that families may be new to online education. That is why SULVS provides orientation, family resources, grade-band meetings, school communications, and opportunities to connect with teachers and staff. Families are not expected to figure out virtual learning alone.
A Louisiana Public Virtual School With a Personal Connection
SULVS offers Louisiana families an alternative to the traditional school setting without giving up the expectations and opportunities of a public school education. Our model combines live online instruction, independent coursework, academic support, family involvement, and opportunities for students to connect beyond the screen.
Behind every Canvas course, virtual meeting, family email, and student success story is a team of educators and staff members who believe students can thrive in a well-supported virtual learning environment.
